Round 1 Australian Suzuki Swift Series
Finance Ezi Racing Suzuki Swift #6
Mallala Motorsport Park SA
April 19,20,21 2013
I arrived at Mallala midday well prepared, excited and focused on a strong result. After spending the afternoon finalizing my seat position and seatbelts, I proceeded to mount a pair of go pro cameras supplied by Arcade Headwear.
I had many compliments on the outstanding appearance of #6 Finance Ezi Racing Swift, The car was a 100% wrap by the good blokes at Wrap City on the Gold Coast.
The final hours of the afternoon were spent walking the race track taking notes. The circuit has more technical twists than a Tarantino film.
The enormous curbs at turns 1 and 10 were bigger than a Suzuki Swift!
We then moved back to the hotel to watch some onboard footage from last years race meeting and overlaid my notes with the video to prepare the best way possible.
Friday couldn’t have been better.
I was very encouraged that my preparation and homework paid off posting fastest times in all three sessions that put us in great shape for qualifying.
Saturday started off strong as we qualified on pole by 0.0118 of a second!
I decided to call Team Boss Maurie Pickering and inform him of the time gap.
Maurie replied with “im Glad you had a skip this morning Mate!“(in reference to the small time margin)
“Best of luck for the race.”
Race 1 started at 6pm and ran under lights.
The first few laps where very tough, I had my mirrors filled by the blinding headlights on 11 swarming swifts. We lead to the halfway mark where we where passed for the lead and then passed on the last corner to finish third.
I woke to rain, lots of rain…
Race 2: What a shocker!
Started 3rd in greasy damp conditions, as rainfall increased we slipped off the road while settling in we were punted a beauty and killed a shock absorber. I had to nurse a very unwell car home to finish a disappointing 8th.
Race 3: THRILLER!
My final chance to redeem my shocker Race 2. I was determined to give this Race 3 a solid shake.
It was a cracker race with some of the best three wide racing you’ll see anywhere!
We started 5th in patchy wet/dry conditions we slipped back to 7th in the first few laps as the rain intensified. Then we got going and used up the door handles and door mirrors and ragged it to finish 2nd in torrential rain. A satisfying result.
Not a bad debut but should have been better.
Fastest in all practices, Pole Position, 3rd ,8th,2nd and 4th overall for the weekend.
Our car speed was very encouraging however we have a bit to work to do in order to reduce mistakes.
We will come back stronger at Phillip Island on May 24-26.
I wish to thank Maurie and all the good people at Finance Ezi for their support in achieving my goal of winning the 2013 Australian Suzuki Swift Series. Maurie is in the process of building more than a race team, he’s building a Motor Racing identity which I am very proud to be a part of.
Best wishes, and good luck to team mates Josh and Andre competing in DVS at Perth next weekend.
