The Phillip Island Round was the second in the The Hi-Tec Oils Australian Swift Racing Series. This round included one 15 minute sprint race and a 1 hour race. The one hour race was a ‘track share’ arrangement with the Australian Manufacturers Championship endurance race.
After achieving Pole position for the 15 minute Sprint race, Finance Ezi branding led the pack for the entire 15 minutes with Ben Grice behind the wheel. Smashing the opposition by 7 seconds.
The one hour race unfolded differently, with Ben getting Pole again, but now racing in amongst the Manufacturers cars. To his surprise he actually passed several of these “high-powered†cars, and as the track dried out and he turned off the ‘conservative’ switch and starting crawling his way back up the positions from 5th in his class to again hit the front.
Ben worked with another driver to shake the remaining contenders loose. By slip-streaming and sling-shotting out of the corners they gained a sizeable lead with Ben trying to hold the lead in the last 15 minutes until a final lunge on the line by the number 7 car beat him by less than a mudguard – a mere 0.07 seconds.
So the final washup is that even though Ben and Luke Fraser got equal points, Ben sat 2nd because of the finishing order. A great weekends racing with the car performing beautifully and young Ben Grice driving like true champion, in notching up his first National race win.
